How Does Therapy Work?
Your first call
When you call us, we will be happy to gather some basic information from you so that we can get your first appointment scheduled. We will ask for your name, your phone number so we can contact you, and a brief description of what is bringing you to therapy - then we will provide you appointment availability & with the address of the office so that you can come see us.
Your first appointment
We know being in a new setting can be uncomfortable, but we are confident you will feel at ease at our office. We have a waiting area where you can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee if you like. It can also be helpful to know a few things about the process.
Prior to session
We will email you our intake paperwork which you can fill out and send back to us, or print and bring with you. If you prefer, we can also have the paperwork waiting for you at the office.
In the treatment room
No doubt you have seen therapy on television and in movies. Your experience today will be different. No long chaise for you to stare up into the ceiling, but we do have a couch!
You will be comfortable. If you want to hold a pillow, stretch out, or just sit in the chair - it’s all perfectly fine. If you think you might like a therapy dog in the room, we can work that out too - Cookie P. Bear is usually on-call.
We will use this session to learn about you and your reason for attending therapy. We want to really listen to what is going on in your life, and share with you specific ways that we can help.
You might leave with homework - sometimes, we give you something to complete between sessions. Because we only see you for an hour or so at a time, most of your life takes place outside the office and it can be helpful for you to do further exploration outside of session.
After the session
We will send you a follow-up message to confirm the time and date of your next appointment. Generally we will set that appointment during your previous session, but we will always give you a confirmation reminder.
Financial policy
We request that you place a credit or debit card on file at the time of your first appointment. This card does not have to be your primary form of payment, but it will be used to guarantee appointments against late cancellations, or no-show appointments.
We are paneled as in-network providers with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Planned Administrators BCBS - Commonly utilized by Greenville County Government employees, United Health, Optum, and some Employee Assistance Programs.
If your insurance is not listed, please let us know and we will look into becoming paneled with that provider.
All forms of payment (cash, credit, debit, check) are accepted and payment is expected at the time of service unless prior arrangements have been made.
working together
Each session will look a little different based on your goals, your therapist’s treatment model, and the focus of that day’s appointment:
Checking In - we will always check in at the beginning of a session to see how you are doing on that day - emotions sometimes change quickly
Exploring Your Goals - we set goals together and we are going to work with you to help you move towards achieving those specific goals each time we are together
Planning for Next Time - you will have things to consider and maybe even a little bit to work on between sessions.
Each session is about you. While your daily life may be about considering others, the time you spend in treatment is your time and will be focused on the needs you are wanting to address while you are here. It is ok for you to focus on you, and we will help you understand more about why you are here.
